CHARACTER NAME: Courage
FANDOM: Courage the Cowardly Dog
CANON: End of the series.
WHAT THEY LOST: Ability to deal with anything that has a screen (the ones on which data and images are displayed). Television, no. Movie theatre, nuh-uh. Computer, which he turned to figure out what to do with the Monster of the Week and deal with assorted other problems? Hell nah. Instead, the screen will morph into a giant green mask and send him shrieking for the hills.
ABOUT THE CHARACTER:
The inexplicably pink dog of no specified breed that serves as the titular character of the show, Courage is a high-strung canine that spends his days saving his owners from the supernatural, the creepy and the just plain weird. Loyal, loving and almost unbearably adorable, Courage means nothing but well. Nevertheless, his being a most triumphant example of a fraidycat dog, he responds to anything even remotely frightening with a blood-curdling scream. Despite his abhorrence of the weird and scary, he’ll brave them if necessary to protect those he cares about. He values Muriel’s—Courage’s sweet, naïve owner—well-being over his own. Always. He’s willing to take quite a beating to do it too and will just laugh afterward as if he was slapped silly (which he just might have been).
Although the “coward” part of his personality is delineated even in the title of the show, Courage is not a coward when push comes to shove. Although usually terrified out of his wits, he will brave dangers head-on. Incredibly bright as well, he doesn’t resort to beating the crap out of the bad guys as his default go-to plan. Instead, he outsmarts them and, in some cases, even befriends them. Eustace, Muriel’s crotchety old husband, usually aggravates most of these situations. Although Eustace loves taking out his frustrations and disappointments on Courage (usually by scaring the poor animal with a massive green mask), Courage never attacks him and still tries to help him, more often than not because if anything were to happen to him Muriel would suffer.
Abandoned as a puppy after an evil vet sent his parents into space, Muriel found him and named him “Courage”. And it’s this name he proves time and time again. He’s faced mummies, ducks from space and a serial barber who speaks in rhyme. And yet he never gives up, never stops trying and always restores peace and calm to the Bagge farm again. By the end of the series, he’s been screaming so much and so loud that it has actually become a weapon. When faced with a troop of villains, his terrified screaming alone defeats them. On another occasion, his screaming shattered the Sun.
Unfortunately for Courage, he is typically the only one who notices the strange going-ons. When he tries to explain, he resorts to incoherent babbling and shape shifting. This usually results in very few believing or misunderstanding him, which only adds to his already through the roof stress levels.
When screaming, one of many things can happen usually bordering on body horror. When hit, he’ll usually get back up with a semi-crazy laugh. When talking to another animal or when he breaks the fourth wall, he’ll speak correctly, usually one of his many catchphrases. Despite it all, he has a wonderful sense of humor. He is also easily entertained. He’s happy playing with a yo-yo or lying on Muriel’s lap while she sits on her rocker. Although easily intimidated, he’s quick to make friends and is helpful and kind.
THIRD-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE: (This scene would be pre-arrival in Paradisa. Hope that's okay.)
Courage and the Computer engaged in a furious battle of luck and skill. The dog knew he was at a disadvantage, but he refused to be cowed. He would succeed. He would triumph. He would overcome adversity.
The silence stretched so thick it could be cut with a butter knife. Sweat beaded on his pink forehead. His tongue stuck out of his mouth while he concentrated. Everything depended on his decision now. It would all come down to this.
He discarded a card and picked another. When he saw its face, he had to work hard to school his features into a mask. On the screen, a card whisked into the Computer’s hand. Fixing the green visor on his head, Courage pushed another pile of macaroni into the pot, raising the ante by fifteen. The Computer matched with virtual macaroni. Courage’s turn again, he again discarded one of his cards and picked another. This time he couldn’t help the laugh before he quickly stifled it.
“Bet?” the Computer asked.
The dog pushed his entire pile of macaroni into the pot.
“All-in. Someone’s confident.”
“Uh-huh.” Courage nodded.
“All-in.” More virtual macaroni joined the virtual pot on the lower left-hand corner.
Courage dropped his cards onto the table. A straight flush. He grinned.
“Eh, hee, hee, hee!”
“Not so fast.” Five cards turned over on the Computer's screen. An ace, a king, a queen, a jack, and a ten. Hearts, all of them.
Courage’s jaw dropped open. His eyes promptly fell out of their sockets and rolled on the ground.
“Royal flush. You twit.”
FIRST-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE: Wuh? This isn't the farm. Muriel? Where are you? Muriel? There's something weird going on here or my name's Stitchy Mcfoo. And it's not.
INTENT:
There are way too many ponies. We need new animals. On a more serious note, I've loved Courage for forever. And I want to try my hand at a more heroic character.
